This diary features still lifes from the National Gallery's collection, showing world-famous works by artists such as Melendez, Zurburan and Van Gogh alongside still-life details from other masterpieces - the sturdy viola and bow from Vermeer's "A Young Woman Seated at a Virginal", for example. The array of images includes 17th-century Dutch still lifes focusing on elaborately displayed silverware, Chinese porcelain and exotic imported foods; Vanitas paintings, where luxuries such as precious silks and lacquer boxes are shown alongside skulls and hour-glasses, symbolizing the passage of time; simple interior scenes - Cezanne's tiny painting of "The Stove in the Studio", for example - and glorious flower pieces, from Fantin-Latour's delicate "Basket of Roses" to Gaugin's "A Vase of Flowers" with its bold contrasts of orange, green and blue. Each week is illustrated with a different painting in full colour. The diary also gives the dates of all the National Gallery exhibitions and lists national and international holidays, religious holidays and astronomical information.
