The rich profusion of pattern to be found in the National Gallery's collection of paintings is the theme for this 2001 diary. It features patterns from paintings of elaborate tapestries, embroidered robes, ornamented walls and furniture. One of The National Gallery's earliest Italian paintings, "The Virgin and Child Enthroned" by Margarito of Arezzo, for example, provides an array of patterns in jewel-like colours, from gilded crimson folds of drapery to delicately entwined flower borders. There are captions providing information about the paintings, all of which are reproduced in full in the picture index.
