Taken from Plutarch's Lives, this story relates the downfall of the Roman military leader Caius Martius. Dubbed Coriolanus for his victory at Corioli, Martius is slandered by dishonest tribunes and bitterly leaves Rome to fight against it. He joins the Volscian army - the same one he defeated at Corioli - only to be led by his friends and family to abandon his siege on Rome. He is subsequently accused of treachery and dies at the hands of assassins sent by the Volscian leader, Aufidius.
