Politics of ASEAN Economic Cooperation: The Case of ASEAN Industrial Projects

In 1967 Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand formed the ASEAN, and made their commitment to the principle of regional economic co-operation. This was considered to be one of the most promising spheres for constructive interaction between individual states made vulnerable by the superiority of the neighbouring great power. The study begins with a discussion of the pre-conditions that help or hinder co-operation in South-East Asia. It is followed by a discussion of the antecedents to ASEAN's institutional structure as they shape the politics of economic co-operation, and ends with the results and significance in the 1980's of the politics surrounding ASEAN economic co-operation.
