The general visitor to the island of Bali is often astonished by the abundance and variety of paintings. They are traditional and non-traditional, yet typically Balinese, incorporating modern graphic elements from the West with the characteristic Balinese style. In this account, the author examines first the religious and social values and the techniques of painting which constitute the Balinese style, which emphasizes skill, perfection, and elegance at the expense of the artist's individual expression. He describes the intriguing period of transition in which Balinese art finds itself today, torn between the demands for mass production for the tourist trade, and the desire to preserve in traditional paintings the image of Bali as "the last paradise".
