The Federalist Papers is a compilation of 85 political articles and essays written by three of the Founding Fathers - Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, and John Jay - under the shared pseudonym "Publius" to advocate for the ratification of the newly revised United States Constitution, which would give stronger powers to the national government . The first 77 essays were published serially between October 1787 and April 1788 in the Independent Journal, the New York Packet, and The Daily Advertiser. The last eight essays were republished in New York newspapers between June 14 and August 16, 1788. On June 21, 1788, nine states moved to ratify the constitution. This was the minimum number of states required, under Article VII. By the end of July 1788, eleven states had ratified the newly proposed Constitution, thus beginning the process of organizing a new government.
