Fahrelnissa Zeid and Nejad Melih Devrim, who adopted a colorist approach to both their lives and paintings, came together in this exhibition as if two stripes in a rainbow. Apart from a few group exhibitions, “Fahrelnissa and Nejad: Two Generations of the Rainbow", held on May 18 - October 1, 2006 and curated by Haldun Dostoğlu, was the first occasion for observing these two significant painters side-by-side. What Fahrelnissa said about the rainbow, we could easily apply to these two artists: “What would we do without these two stripes?” It would not be wrong to say that this mother and son team – the first representing a generation that gave birth to a new republic out of the troubled years of the empire, the second, a generation that liberated our art during the modernization process – have earned a place among those who have most significantly transformed the history of painting in Turkey. Both artists began their lives on the island of Büyükada in İstanbul and later moved to large European cities, then escaped the unfathomable psychological whirlpools that plague life in the big city to end up on different sides of the world.
