The Ford Cortina made its break on the banks of the River Thames at Abingdon. A fourteen year old girl, wrested from her Yorkshire moors, farm and Girl Guides had been giving stick to her parents from the back seat all the way from Adel, Leeds. 'Is there any countryside in Sussex?' she anxiously asked the fellow customers at the bar. 'Oh yes. No worries. Loads of Downs and sheep,' was the reply. Actually, I'm not sure they used the phrase 'no worries' all those years ago. It was a relief, and probably also for my parents, as I think the rant subsided. The men at that bar were spot on. There are loads of Downs and sheep in Sussex, and loads more beside. Sussex is so beautiful you want to write a love letter to it. There are 247 colour photographs, and a 1,234 word index/encyclopaedia at the back.
