The creation of the Single European Market in 1992 provides enormous opportunities and challenges. This book focuses on two processes: first, the economic integration of the states of the European Community (EC) and second, how the application of information and communication technologies (ICTs) will restructure their economic activities. The approach adopted takes an economic, spatial and socio-political/cultural focus and argues that ICTs are probably the most potent force for change in the transformation of the EC. The book divides into five sections: the first considers the macro-scale dimensions of economic, political and cultural integration: the second looks at the key role played by telecommunications and broadcasting policy: the third considers the standard of integration: the fourth deals with restructuring and competition in specific business sectors and the fifth clarifies the issues raised by social, economic and technological aspects of co-operation. Overall the book focuses on the problems and opportunities facing policy-makers and looks to the future prospects of integration within the ICT industries in Europe.
