Some of Britain’s most memorable castles are located in Gwynedd, and this guidebook (available only in Welsh) describes the history and remains of eight of them, which are in Cadw’s care. Four — Dolwyddelan, Dolbadarn, Castell y Bere and Criccieth — are strongholds of the princes of Gwynedd, built to defend their lands and serve as centres of authority. All were first raised by Llywelyn ab Iorwerth, the Great, in the first half of the thirteenth century. The others — Caernarfon, Conwy, Harlech and Beaumaris — are castles that Edward I constructed in the late thirteenth century to consolidate his hold over his conquests in north Wales. This 48-page guidebook is printed in A5 format and has black-and-white and colour illustrations.
