About the Book The history of Spain dates back to the Middle Ages. After expelling Muslim rulers in the Reconquista, the Crown of Castile sent Christopher Columbus into the Atlantic Ocean in 1492. In 1910 a revolution deposed the monarchy. In the context of widespread corruption, repression of the church, and near bankruptcy of Portugal, a military coup in 1926 installed a dictatorship that maintained power until another coup in 1974.
