In this book, the author does not concern himself with either the topography of ancient Roman campaigns and battles or the details of organization and equipment. Instead, he discusses the way in which the Romans used the means at hand in the circumstances of their time. Readers see how the Roman art of war depended on the quality and quantity of soldiers and on the physical setting of the employment of troops. A chapter on foreign policy and general strategy brings readers to a deeper understanding of the Roman attitude toward war, which was very matter-of-fact. Since war was a necessary evil, Romans addressed it with tenacity and cool stubbornness rather than swift aggression. And the chapter on generalship characterizes the strategic skills of some leading military figures, including Caesar a soldier's general who never failed to see beyond the battle before him toward the road to ultimate victory.
