J. Kutter examines the role of the sun gods and goddesses in Ugarit (chap. 2), according to Phoenician (chap. 3) and Aramaic sources (chap. 4) as well as in Israel and Judah (chap. 5). Throughout the whole monograph special attention is paid to Utu/Shamash in Mesopotamia. Digressions are devoted to Utu in texts from Ebla, the mythological implications of the horizon, where the rising and setting of the sun is situated, Shamash in Old Akkadian glyptic, and the sun god in Neo-Assyrian inscriptions.
