“Groove” is a somewhat ambiguous member of the drummer’s lexicon, and as such, deserves definition. From a general viewpoint, the word suggest a certain rhythmic precision in group playing, not unlike the word “tight” or the phrase “in the pocket.” From a drummer’s perspective, groove can also indicate a particular rhythmic motif, which, when played repeatedly, with precision, takes on a certain musical flow and pulse of its own. It evokes the listener’s affinity (in other words, it feels good!). The precise notational makeup of the groove may or may not remain constant, but the basic feel remains.
