“Groove” is a somewhat ambiguous member of the drummer’s lexicon, and as such, deserves definition. From a general viewpoint, the word suggest a certain rhythmic precision in group playing, not unlike the word “tight” or the phrase “in the pocket.” From a drummer’s perspective, groove can also indicate a particular rhythmic motif, which, when played repeatedly, with precision, takes on a certain musical flow and pulse of its own. It evokes the listener’s affinity (in other words, it feels good!). The precise notational makeup of the groove may or may not remain constant, but the basic feel remains. In this book, Great Grooves for the Contemporary Drummer, you are invited to apply your own “touch” to the grooves. Some are simple, others are rather complex, but they will offer you musical and co-ordinational challenges, as well as new ideas you may wish to explore further. Each groove has its own legend of notation and sticking is indicated when pertinent.
