This exploration of the blood feuding and its ramifications in Thull, a Kohistani tribal community in the Hindy-Kush Mountains of Pakistan shows how 'mar dushmani', (literally, 'death enmity') has come to interpenetrate the mountaineers' lives - their belief in God, concepts of self, patterns of ecological adaptation, housing structure, the number and kinds of dogs men own, and the kinship and political system. This text explains how the intolerably violent life in Thull goes on in spite of a lack of police, judiciary, and centralized authority. It describes from a historical perspective how blood feuding came to infect social relations in Thull, and the consequences the violence has had on its society and culture.
