Excerpt from Food Budgets for Nutrition and Production Programs: December 1933To convert the data of table 1 into estimates for production, suit able margins must be added to different types of food to cover the unavoidable losses in harvesting, transportation, storage, grading, processing, and distribution.In order to furnish the nutritive values shown in table 1 1 for persons in various age and activity groups, the per capita diet of the people of the United States should provide on an average, calories; 68 grams of protein; gram of calcium; grams of phosphorus; gram of iron; units of vitamin A; and 95 units of vitamin 0 per capita per day. These figures are exclusive of waste.
